<br />
<br />
Whoa it has been a while since I have dusted off the old keyboard and put ink to paper so to speak! Some may have noticed the name change/tweak, and that is because my interests in miniature wargaming have expanded. I have dabbled in X-Wing, Flames of War, and most recently Bolt Action. I have played some great games this summer and winter, and my terrain collection has grown a lot. I have played a fair share of 40k and even qualified for Feasts of Blades. Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but from hearing about attendance numbers, I guess I was not the only one.<br />
<br />
So what does the future hold? I will be posting up WIP Wednesdays, an article that will feature what projects I'm working on that particular week. I hope to have articles on other game systems besides 40k. Terrain will be a large theme this year as I hope to do more tables and theme my terrain to my armies. I will also be doing a few features on different armies I own and people in my game group.<br />
<br />
While 40k is still my main game system, Bolt Action is going to get a lot of page time. It is a great game and I will be running a lot of demos and convention games for it. Hopefully this will be of interest to the masses. So hang on as we accelerate to 88mph and get back into gaming and blogging!<br />

Tickets just went on sale today for the 2014 Bugeater GT in Omaha, NE. This is a great event that I have attended twice. I missed last year due to a new job, and have been regretting it since. This next one is a definite must attend if you are in the mid-west region. New this year is a Friday team tournament! Here is their release for the event...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<img border="0" src="http://gt.bugeatergames.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Customer-Copy_47877_Color-e1382724793111.jpg" /> <br /><br /><b>The fourth annual Bugeater <span class="glossaryitem">GT</span> will be June 6th to June 8th, 2014!</b><br /> <a href="http://gt.bugeatergames.com/" target="_blank">http://gt.bugeatergames.com/</a><br /><br /><a href="http://gt.bugeatergames.com/?product_cat=tickets" rel="nofollow" target="_new">Click here for tickets</a> <br /><br /> We can officially announce the fourth Bugeater <span class="glossaryitem">GT</span>. This year it will be held on June 6th through June 8th at Millard West High School in Omaha, NE. The Grand Tournament is not only an awesome weekend of gaming, but it is also a fundraiser for the debate team that I coach that raises thousands of dollars for our program. The Millard West debate team has won the state championship the past four years, and has had students place in the top 20 at the NFL national tournament. Our success would not be possible without your support! <br /><br /><br /> Now the basics: <br /><br /> We have a 6 round, 72 person <span class="glossaryitem">40k</span> tournament. Players will field 1850 point armies, and we will use NOVA style missions (both tiered and cumulative). We are tentatively going to break to brackets the last three rounds to help diversify our awards and give more than just the one undefeated something to play for. <br /><br /> We also have a 5 round, 64 person fantasy tournament. Point levels to be determined, but this year we are removing our army composition restrictions for the fantasy tournament this year. <br /><br /> Our cost is low at $55. That's for three days of gaming, and a swag bag, access to the Golden Gobbo painting competition (our version of the Golden Daemon), and a chance at over a dozen prizes for fantasy and <span class="glossaryitem">40k</span> each. This is possible because we get access to the facilities for free in exchange for donating money to the debate program. <br /><br /> We will again have thousands of dollars to give away in swag bags, raffles between the rounds, and prizes for award winners. <br /><br /> We have awesome concessions at the tournament. The debate kids and staff run the concessions, and in addition to lunch you can get at the tournament site, they will come around to your game tables and take orders for pop, candy, chips, etc. while you're playing. That's service! <br /><br /> If you're looking for some diverse competition this is your <span class="glossaryitem">GT</span>. Last year we had people come in from more than 12 different states from California to Texas to Ohio in addition to the states in our region. We're a 2 hour drive from <span class="glossaryitem">Des</span> Moines, 3 hours from KC, and only 6 from the Twin Cities. <br /><br /> Tickets are now on sale! We have the basic details for each event and we will be releasing more comprehensive test packs soon for you to try out and give us feedback on. <br /><br /> Thanks in advance for your continued support of the Bugeater <span class="glossaryitem">GT</span>! <br />Dunn911http://www.blogger.com/profile/04528417511673449145noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8697785722323578190.post-28102262478841612252013-12-02T19:16:00.001-06:002013-12-02T19:16:51.382-06:00December RTT in Sioux Falls.....Free!!<div style="text-align: center;">

Games Workshop is really pushing Digital Media this month with the 25 days of Christmas promotion. So far they have introduced 2 new rules types for 40k, the Dataslate and the Formation. Also on the way are 2 new supplements, Escalation and Stronghold Assault. If you surf the web, you would think the end of the world is coming!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Gamers are a funny bunch. We are never satisfied and hate change. We always want change but we hate it when it happens. All through 5th edition people wanted more codexes done faster. They cried for the old "Chapter Approved" material of old to be redone and included in 6th edition. They wanted more and different ways to play 40k.......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6th edition happened. We are getting codexes at a ridiculous speed. GW looks to have almost all codexes updated by the end of next year. That is unheard of for them. And the fans cry now they are coming too fast. They can not keep up they say.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now Games Workshop is releasing 25 digital releases in December, one a day till Christmas. Some are rules, some are fluff and stories. So far we have seen a new rule Dataslate. It is simply rules for one model/unit that inserts into an existing codex or two. This is awesome in my opinion. With these GW can add anything to any codex! This is what Chapter Approved used to be. But, but, it's not free the people cry out. Well yea, and neither was chapter approved. You had to buy the White Dwarf back in the day or buy the Chapter Approved compilation books. So instead of a $7-9 White Dwarf back then, you can spend $4-5 now on digital stuff. Looks like savings to me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Day 2 brought us our first Formation. These are a group of units that fight together and get some special rules. They do not take up an ally slot, and you can have as many of them as you wish. The internet is a fire right now on how these will kill the game. I see them as simply another way to play. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly Games Workshop is releasing 2 new supplements, Escalation, and Stronghold Assault. Again the internet is freaking out on how super heavy vehicles will ruin the game. Personally I think 3-4 riptides is way worse than any bane blade. I am looking forward to these 2 releases as they will give me new toys to add to my Sister's of Battle army. With a unit light codex, anything new that I can take is a huge deal for me. C:I was a great addition, but adding a storm shadow would be icing on the cake. Is it a game breaker? I don't think so, as the game still comes down to claiming objectives. I also love the idea of being able to choose to field bunkers as my defense and make my opponent assault me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5d7baOekq9vRbwJ0jbiyb1f14FbImXbPsVq2fiaAAtYfhABjfSwaOhCiizL_R9IjVUysuDwtjKPP-gNuoqQjhcMWnHSfK9rXvbaEunTF2kv7uDY5NRFWn_2Q2glQ5UHC-cZQDuhtVZdY/s1600/cute-and-fluffy-akita-puppy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5d7baOekq9vRbwJ0jbiyb1f14FbImXbPsVq2fiaAAtYfhABjfSwaOhCiizL_R9IjVUysuDwtjKPP-gNuoqQjhcMWnHSfK9rXvbaEunTF2kv7uDY5NRFWn_2Q2glQ5UHC-cZQDuhtVZdY/s400/cute-and-fluffy-akita-puppy.jpg" width="335" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Puppy says "why so serious?"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
People just need to take a deep breath and step back a second. Once we play some games with the new rules, it will be clear what is broken and what was just new. So my opinion here is bring it all on. Bring on your Forge World. Bring on your Digital Codexes. Bring on your Stompa!! Because in the end, any game of 40k is better than no game of 40k!</div>

I have been looking for some alternate tables for my game room for when I'm tiered of brown wastelands. This looks to be my answer. The MegaMat by FRONTLINE Gaming and Tablewar. At $95 for a 6 by 4 foot gaming mat this looks to be a great deal. </div>

One of my projects for the winter and up coming year, is to improve my game room. My kids call it the hobbit hole due to the small undersized door into the room. I would like to change the lighting in the room, and also finish the walls, ceiling, and flooring. </div>

Currently the walls are just plywood. This makes for a very dark feeling in the room. It also casts an orangish glow in the room. The room also has a low ceiling making my choices for lighting few. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My plan for lighting is to switch the on bulb that is in the ceiling to a florescent set of long bulbs. It is above my game table and I just want to get more light in the room. Pot lights along the edges is also a possibility. the ceiling will probably get a coat of white paint, and the floor will get coated in some garage floor epoxy. I would go with a different flooring choice, but as my game room is in the basement, it is susceptible to water coming in during extreme down pours. I have a large rug that covers most of the floor and can be pulled up in case of flooding.</div>

These Klingsbo glass cabinets are pretty nice and are reasonable pricewise too. These are my rough draft plans for the Hobbit Hole. Lots more to come this winter!<br />

I expect codex Inquisition to be battle brothers with all marine codexes. Take your Blood Angels codex. Use a unit of 10 thunder hammer storm shield terminators. Add Corbulo for feel no pain. Add a priest for fearless and hate. Battle hymns I would use the reroll armor and invulnerable saves one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What do you have? You have a fearless unit, that rerolls the first round of combat, They can reroll their saves and get 5+ feel no pain in hand to hand. That's better than the screamer star. they also have a 3+/2+fnp Independent character that can tank the shooting wounds for them! And not to forget they could reroll one dice per game due to Corbulo's special ability!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So a lot of what ifs here, and several things can make it not happen. On Saturday the 16th of November we will see if it will be fully operational, or just destroyed by a lucky shot!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
After my worse tournament showing in a very long time, a serious list shake up was needed. I know I needed to add grav weapons, and centurions will be my go to unit. Their lack of an invulnerable save and their shorter range will mean I need a delivery system. <br />
<br />
This and my love of Land Raiders led me to revisit the double Land raider list.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv_Qz09OMQTXB1G717GiHI5VPGQnWxiADvLhnawB1Mo00Ne-u1xdcY1W3Sp7pKvlrwpE6wlfMvDU2Zo9puiZ78x9NPHzVKbK2VA-TaIu4MxSlHt3jcx2ERHRsuwsqduFpudcR2TTIIBZM/s1600/untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="162" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv_Qz09OMQTXB1G717GiHI5VPGQnWxiADvLhnawB1Mo00Ne-u1xdcY1W3Sp7pKvlrwpE6wlfMvDU2Zo9puiZ78x9NPHzVKbK2VA-TaIu4MxSlHt3jcx2ERHRsuwsqduFpudcR2TTIIBZM/s320/untitled.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I love land Raiders. They are super fun to play, so this list makes me all giddy inside. With 2 redeemers, opponents will have to kill them or they will decimate their lines. At 500 points, they are eating up a large chunk of my army too.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2pZQcHipvs1md7hvh9vkwADSAcBvkZ3QTWH-gkayq7E8S1oakS47v8_qQDLXHziu4QQgbUTm5IJOHs-07AGbF6_ti4BhDPd4p4o603-OGbR-GJg2L5RdwVYdS7Lbh6wwrCFa5oyYEcso/s1600/IMG_9794.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2pZQcHipvs1md7hvh9vkwADSAcBvkZ3QTWH-gkayq7E8S1oakS47v8_qQDLXHziu4QQgbUTm5IJOHs-07AGbF6_ti4BhDPd4p4o603-OGbR-GJg2L5RdwVYdS7Lbh6wwrCFa5oyYEcso/s320/IMG_9794.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
To help them survive, I am going to ally in a Dark Angel's Librarian on a bike. I will give him the power field generator so my Land Raider have a 4++. He will be small enough to hide be hind 2 Land Raiders, and fast enough to keep up with them. Then when my centurions deploy, the librarian can zoom around and join the unit giving them a 4++. Divination will also be very big for this unit.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLMQFJnAlHEr1TzMZz1V-PDNlvwhNHmNWuaDluH-N3Ivt0iMv9p1uFHqiB0oDutkD8_DwTYNCucSRO-Iq754oVfhFdk7m4X0Ps0O2shzRDMPc4YoT3cLWxokp_7AvCQXYJt6VbDtwEmbE/s1600/landraider.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLMQFJnAlHEr1TzMZz1V-PDNlvwhNHmNWuaDluH-N3Ivt0iMv9p1uFHqiB0oDutkD8_DwTYNCucSRO-Iq754oVfhFdk7m4X0Ps0O2shzRDMPc4YoT3cLWxokp_7AvCQXYJt6VbDtwEmbE/s320/landraider.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In the end, I will get to do some flaming death to traitors, and that is all I really need... :)<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAu_y_t4oGJ6S-rL7D_Czo1sLPMktmOEYc9DUg57c6cDVr1OyEHQzFT6gGyPG27cokVXCyF5m0WQunqrhoyL43iSIUyQlVKp7g-9vh518O8ERymOZhRr-PsXU-mIuKg4YTWttpy41wNvc/s1600/40k-radio-300x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAu_y_t4oGJ6S-rL7D_Czo1sLPMktmOEYc9DUg57c6cDVr1OyEHQzFT6gGyPG27cokVXCyF5m0WQunqrhoyL43iSIUyQlVKp7g-9vh518O8ERymOZhRr-PsXU-mIuKg4YTWttpy41wNvc/s1600/40k-radio-300x300.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When I got back into 40k, 40k Radio was the first podcast I listened too. I found out that I loved to paint while listening to podcasts. I even paid the membership fee to become a Freeboota, and for a year I was a huge fan boy. Man I love the movie sound bite clip at the end of the show!<br />
<br />
But all was not well. Some of their negativity towards 40k, and their shift towards other games soured my love. Then came the commercial breaks. I'm all for making a buck, but it seemed over done. They fell in my rotation of podcasts that I regularly listen to. <br />
<br />
They had recently announced they were switching to a once a month release schedule. This was not surprising as you can "hear" the love for the podcast was gone. Kyle and Rick were still great as always but you can just feel this podcast was a chore for Romeo. With episode 69 they have announced they are changing format due to Games Workshop's C and D letter. They blame the forced changes on GW, but it seems a convenient excuse to steer the podcast away from 40k and on to other games. 40k will still get segment on the show, but the writing's on the wall. 40K Radio is dying.<br />
<br />
Hopefully they will step out of the way, and allow the 40k Radio name to be passed on. Unfortunately I believe they will try to sell the name if give it up at all. In the end it is the fans that suffer. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last month I attended the Khornehusker RTT in Omaha, NE. It was a great RTT with 24 people attending. My space marines were not ready with the new toys of the codex, but I thought I could push through a vehicle heavy, 5th edition list. I was wrong, but all was not lost. I learned several lessons and did pull some good units out of that list for future use.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My plan was to run a 5th edition list of 2x vindicators along side a land raider redeemer. I ran some land speeder typhoons, a storm raven, and a storm talon. For troops I had a couple 5 man squads in razorbacks with twin lascannons plus 2x scout squads in land speeder storms. In the land raider I had 5 thunder hammer storm shield terminators plus a level 2 librarian. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RzV4Shmmr-o/Tr2e5PpCQRI/AAAAAAAACnE/lzm7ubhBo64/s1600/DSC01869.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RzV4Shmmr-o/Tr2e5PpCQRI/AAAAAAAACnE/lzm7ubhBo64/s320/DSC01869.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I knew I would be facing several lists with lots of riptides and wraithknights. They were there plus there were several daemon lists with 4-5 flying daemon princes. I thought the vindicators would help me control the middle like they had in the past. Boy did I miscalculate that! Riptides do not fear vindicators. Sure they will put a wound on them, but in the end it is just one wound. They really need a rule like the cannon in fantasy, with d3 or d6 wounds per model. Heck, instant death on a 6 to wound would help and be fluffy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that plan did not work. My vindi's spent the game missing, not normal for me, and my opponents simply ignored or killed them. The land raider was good, but not game winning good. The storm raven was very good, but one game it did not come on till turn 4. I think this is a flaw with fliers and a reason flier heavy armies are not dominating.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The good things I took away from the 0-3 tournament, is that typhoons were money. The heavy bolters and missiles were good for mowing down infantry and throwing wounds on the big guys. I also liked the typhoon missile launcher on the storm talon. having strength 8 was huge and being able to put blast templates on infantry was nice.</div>

Land speeder storms and scout squads were also very useful. They were mobile and able to be were I needed them to be. They were also pretty survivable. The storm gets a jinx save if it moved and that is more than a rhino gets.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My list was missing grav guns. I needed a unit with multiples of these weapons to allow me to kill the new large monstrous creatures in one turn. I needed to run either a unit of centurions or a bike squad or two with a couple grav guns. Another space marine army there ran a unit of grav centurions, and he seemed to have good results with them. For my Bugeater list I plan on adding them, and another land raider redeemer. Two land raiders will control the middle if I have a shooty centurion squad and an assault terminator squad. I have also picked up some Dark Angels and will add a Libby on a bike with the power field. A 4++ for the Redeemers will make them very scary and hopefully get me to turn 2 with them.<br />
<br />
Now to go work so I can buy the $200 in models I need!<br />

Nov 16th I'm going to make the trek north to Minneapolis barring weather problems. There is a 3 game rtt at a store I have never attended before. This will be a great opportunity to check out a new store, meet some new players, and play the SoB with the new codex. Cons could be their setup but I think it is worth the adventure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A by product of going to a tournament is I get new models and units painted. With out this deadline, I never complete new stuff. For this tournament I have to get my conclave, Jacobus, and a couple rhinos and exorcist painted. I also had to rearm several celestians and convert up a simulacrum.</div>

Today I have pictures of my canoness's rhino. I wanted a sweet ride for her. I do not have a land raider or other center piece model for my SoB. She will be riding with a Retributor unit, so I would like extra armor on my rhino. At 5 points for a pintle storm bolter, I figured why not. I also wanted to model Loud Hailers on it in case I want to pay for that option.</div>

I started with a rhino I had painted already. I have one unassembled in a box, but I might want to make an Inquisition rhino with their new codex coming out. I also had 5 rhinos for my SoB army, witch is to many. One is also being changed over to an Exorcist tank. 4 rhinos and 3 Immolators is a good number for now.</div>

I wanted extra armor on it and I have a set of the exorcist tank side armor plates. These are very nice and originally I wanted to recast them. Unfortunately I don't think tat day is anytime soon, so on the tank they go. I also love the SOB loud hailers. They are a very nice way to decorate the rhino and set it apart from their space marine brothers.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book had very good pros. I like having a physical codex in hand. Must be the hoarder in me. A serious con was the physical weight of the book. Maybe not one book per say but add in 2-3 more codexes and my KR case starts putting on real weight! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The biggest reason I went with the Ipad version was the fact that the new SOB codex will be digital only. I have a large SoB army and this is a must by for me. If I was going to go digital for one codex then digital it is for all!</div>

Fast forward to today, and my 48 hours of nonstop playing with my new codex. I think it was a great decision to pick the ipad version. It is beautiful, easy to use, and really helpful. The fact that pages are linked to summaries and definitions, makes it heads and tails better than it's print version.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Personally I felt the White Dwarf codex was half of the codex. I believe it was simply rules for the models they already had out in circulation. Fast forward to today's digital codex. I still believe this is an updated half of a codex that is done, but waiting on models for the complete release. GW can not release rules anymore with out a model or it will loose the ip to it. With digital codexes they can release the pages of what they have, and come back and update the digital codex later when the full release happens. I hope I'm right on this as it is a brilliant way to protect their IP and yet update rules for existing armies.</div>

<br />
<br />
Operation New Codex will be a series of articles on new or different units I will be considering adding to my Crimson Fist army. With every new codex, comes change. This new Space Marine codex is no different. This time has not been as bad, with most units only getting cheaper and adding a couple new types.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
First unit I am actually thinking of adding to my army is Devastator squads. I have a Crimson Fist army, so I will be using Imperial Fist chapter tactics. This gives me bolter drill and tank hunter on my devastator squads. Both of these benefit devastators if they take heavy bolters. Combine that with some cheaper weapon options, and these are looking to make my list for the first time since 3rd edition.<br />
<br />
A five man squad with 4 heavy bolters will run 110 points. That is not a lot to invest to get 12 strength 5 shots rerolling ones and tank hunter. This is a great anti infantry squad that is so cheap, I will not miss it if it dies or is out of position. I have run retribution squad Sister's of Battle with heavy bolters and love them. 12 shots can put the hurt on units and I will probably run 2 squads.<br />
<br />
Second option is to run them with one missile launcher and pay for the sky fire missile. They can still kill infantry with a frag missile and could knock out a light flier. One shot is not much, but with the signum bumping the bs of the missile to 5, he should hit. This will only increase the points to 125 per squad, still a bargain. The loss of one heavy bolter will be off set by adding others in other squads like scouts in storms.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGcjbawyzWysXMiJ6zIW1HEITaQf_mjyuJAWYr3T3-7B3nUTUW_00dDNtILe1SEDvKe4ihaGAKckH7rGiuWQH17-kDfvK0ypGBAAsB5964WM9-zV56PrdE9p0syl9FYetqA-XM3Nvkit4/s1600/640px-Sm_heavy_bolter_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGcjbawyzWysXMiJ6zIW1HEITaQf_mjyuJAWYr3T3-7B3nUTUW_00dDNtILe1SEDvKe4ihaGAKckH7rGiuWQH17-kDfvK0ypGBAAsB5964WM9-zV56PrdE9p0syl9FYetqA-XM3Nvkit4/s400/640px-Sm_heavy_bolter_2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So in short, Devastator squads are looking to become a staple unit in my new codex marine armies. Imperial Fist chapter tactics really help bolters, so I am looking at a hammer and anvil style army that really leverages the bolters. Tactical squads backed up with Devastators with a bike and scout force to take objectives. <br />
<br />
Next up I will look at how scouts have changed and how they have changed for me. Thanks again, all comments welcome!Dunn911http://www.blogger.com/profile/04528417511673449145noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8697785722323578190.post-4203969114731638162013-09-14T16:41:00.000-05:002013-09-15T06:16:51.549-05:00New Space Marines; game one<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Yesterday I got my first game in using the new Space Marine codex. It was a fun 2000 point game vs Brian and Blake and their Emperor's Children and Nurgle Plague marines. I took 2000 points of Crimson Fists lead by Pedro Kantor and Capt Cortez in terminator armor. I'm not going to give a play by play but I do want to hit on some of my first impressions after using the codex.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmKvXvADZWvPlm4DwaSEatkN8QJFUXkt5whWoZ5b0LFG39aRMHoiO0oIoyQmnDAGQY-Km32EuWD_LEWc3C3U1R3HEujB_9MI_2h2ANpGJTRnxZcuzl_Axf6w5h6Yli6xZMHs1aXsVt1ac/s1600/m420429a_P4Mb1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmKvXvADZWvPlm4DwaSEatkN8QJFUXkt5whWoZ5b0LFG39aRMHoiO0oIoyQmnDAGQY-Km32EuWD_LEWc3C3U1R3HEujB_9MI_2h2ANpGJTRnxZcuzl_Axf6w5h6Yli6xZMHs1aXsVt1ac/s320/m420429a_P4Mb1.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
My list;<br />
<br />
Pedro Kantor<br />
Capt in terminator armor with relic stomach shield and thunder hammer<br />
6 man honor guard with chapter banner in drop pod<br />
9 stern guard in drop pod<br />
10 tactical marines in drop pod vet sarg with power weapon and mm and melta<br />
10 ccw scouts with vet sarg and power weapon<br />
Ironclad dreadnought<br />
Storm raven<br />
Hunter<br />
5 bolter scouts in land speeder storm<br />
5 terminators. One assault cannon<br />
<br />
Things I tried to do or see on the battlefield. I wanted to see chapter tactic in use. I wanted to use honor guard as they went down 10 points apiece! I wanted to try out the hunter before I picked up the kit. I wanted to use the new eternal warrior shield on a character.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Lessons learned so far.....</b></span><br />
My first time out with the Hunter was less than impressive. Blake and Brian did not have any fliers, skimmers, or flying monstrous creatures, so I was snap firing the whole game. This was ok as I expect to have games where this will be the case. I hit once the whole game and rolled a double ones for armor pen.... Lol.<br />
<br />
As for chapter tactics, my luck was a little better. I did not take a lot of units that benefited from it but I was able to see it getting used. It was definitely not over powering, especially in the age of guide far seers and divination libbies. White Scars with Khan is looking to be the beast chapter.<br />
<br />
Honor Guard were good. I lead them with the relic shield captain. They killed a lot of noise marines but struggled vs plague marines. Lesson learned is I need to finish my power ax honor guard to beef up their killing power. They were a great gun line unit with bolsters, bolt pistols, and power weapons. I'm not sure Blake and Brian like this unit.<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Things I want to try out...</b></span><br />
I want to make a shield captain in artificer armor and a bike captain with bike command squad. Bikes got so cheap, and look like a lot of fun. Centurions look like fun and I definitely want to run a list centered around heavy bolter devastators and bolter drill.<br />
<br />
Ally options look insane, and I would like to see how tough Iron Hands dreadnoughts are.<br />
<br />
This was just some quick thoughts I had on the new dex. I think it is good but not meta breaking. These are not another grey knight codex. I do think hey will tone down the Tau and Eldar lists.<br />
<br />
October I plan on making the trip to Omaha for the Khornhusker RTT. This will be fun as I have not played any tournaments for a while. This also means I need to put some thought into what I want to run!<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><br /></b></span>

Large battles are a great way to play and not take games so seriously. Some of my favorite moments are from apocalypse battles. Who can forget my Salamander scouts assaulting a stompa, or Chip's Emperor's Champion taking on the great gargant!<br />

Warhammer 40k is an every changing game. The last six months has been a roller coaster of a ride the likes we have never seen. So many codex releases and a new edition to absorb means what was once good is no longer the cat's meow. Today's face of 40k is no longer the super human Space Marines. Heck today's face is not even human! The last 2 alien codexes has changed what everyone is playing or has changed what people are preparing to face.</div>

While Chaos Marines and Dark Angels came out first, it was Daemons that made the first major changes to what and how people are playing. Very rare will be the Chaos Marine list that is just marines. Daemons are almost always an ally now and CSM (Chaos Space Marines) are also taken to ally when Daemons are primary. The 2 lists work well together and Heldrakes are that good..</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
The next codex that shook up the meta is Tau. With there massive numbers of shots, and the new giant size figure, Tau have changed a couple things in people's lists. First change would be for Marine players is the weight of fire Tau can put out. A 3+ is no longer enough to survive the numbers of shots and wounds Tau can put out. Marines just cost too much and have too few bodies on the field to survive. <br />
<br />
Second big change Tau brought in was the amount of skyfire they bring. Over night people are able to ally in effective anti air. Flyer heavy lists will struggle and people will knee jerk away from flyer heavy lists.<br />
<br />
Tau are also able to ignore a lot of cover. This means small units of objective campers beware.<br />
<br />
Tau also brought us the Riptide. This is a change more in what future codex model ranges will get. The birth of the Big Kit!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrGu82yafjpX3uQ5KvZ8g-8qf2ENDJfxSnAtYSEfQoxlB7oLJZgclsdKPHK0rK6b6DTMTCoNLsebM99FosPUvBrBhN2vczMjeTvlIo9wVyHmoJ2oUcmfIhYlvFUCbyXVeF9PDFxW4g1g/s1600/Eldar_Warlock_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrGu82yafjpX3uQ5KvZ8g-8qf2ENDJfxSnAtYSEfQoxlB7oLJZgclsdKPHK0rK6b6DTMTCoNLsebM99FosPUvBrBhN2vczMjeTvlIo9wVyHmoJ2oUcmfIhYlvFUCbyXVeF9PDFxW4g1g/s320/Eldar_Warlock_2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Eldar codex completes the change of the 40K face. Marines had a chance with 2+ save models to wither the weight of fire armies until the Eldar. This one army and it's basic shuriken weapon makes it had to field 2+ armies. The large numbers of bs 4 weapons that on a 6 to hit are ap2 is ridiculous.<br />
<br />
They too get a giant model the wraith knight that is the size of a Stompa! Durable vehicles will also be a monkey wrench for a lot of armies.<br />
<br />
Their psychic powers and the large number of rerolls they can put out there is impressive.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
So what does this mean? Not much really, times change. You will probably see more zenos armies than ever before. Space Marines will be in the minority in tournaments. Assault is DEAD..........for this is the TIME OF THE ALIEN. But do not despair brother for our time to strike back is coming.............<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6FD5Go_4X9k/T6JRhhdX8CI/AAAAAAAAD5g/c2i51qh2ZMk/s1600/KKID028_LG2_270_247_76.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6FD5Go_4X9k/T6JRhhdX8CI/AAAAAAAAD5g/c2i51qh2ZMk/s1600/KKID028_LG2_270_247_76.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
As I sit here at work, my mind drifting off thinking of my next 40k project, I keep wanting to do a pure assault army. 6th edition has really changed how assault armies play and the game has shifted towards a more shoot first play style. I do believe there is hope and in fact I believe there is a dominate assault list out there vs the current meta.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
6th edition did not kill assault armies, it just made it really, really hard to get there. The hull point rules changes and no longer being able to assault out of stationary vehicles, has made the delivery tougher. Random charge lengths and the way it works with difficult terrain has also made assaults less dependable. Dangerous terrain changes now mean you may loose your power weapon or fists. Over watch and armies shifting to shooting means it is simply harder to hit with enough of your army to win combats. Armies of fliers is also a problem for pure assault armies as they can only be shot.<br />
<br />
So my desire to play a pure assault army has some challenges. Survivability and speed seem to be the keys. With this in mind, I have been looking at doing a Blood Angels army. At first it was to be an allied force for my SOB army, but has been fleshed out to full army status.<br />
<br />
Speed.... With all this shooting going on and so many fliers, it is imperative to get into assaults as soon as possible. The faster you tie him up, the less he can shoot at you and the less he has to shoot. I think you have to be able to be in assaults by your turn 2 to see good results. <br />
<br />
To do this I'm looking at a drop pod heavy force. Drop pods are nice now that you can deploy 6 inches out of them. This means you can put yourself in good shooting positions and take advantage of cover. Also half of your pods will come in turn one. This is also good as you can choose what you want in that first wave. Drop pods also allow you to be any where on the board turn one. Alot of 6th is position and objective based now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_nQLPv_hlSgOzXMo8iTkSDvVTP3HgEXQRevRXOl0q5ukx838IDJafkKjYKGUOCbHCYpBxkyMGxthLjoiNlfshrKk-no4ga8AMnbb1peHAdUdvXwuABYwMlNwDeoDFuGkshJgdfiWSCc/s1600/DSC00712.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_nQLPv_hlSgOzXMo8iTkSDvVTP3HgEXQRevRXOl0q5ukx838IDJafkKjYKGUOCbHCYpBxkyMGxthLjoiNlfshrKk-no4ga8AMnbb1peHAdUdvXwuABYwMlNwDeoDFuGkshJgdfiWSCc/s320/DSC00712.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Survivability.... Blood Angels were chosen due to my Lysander in a command squad list. Feel no pain adds so much to a unit when you already have a 2+ save and a 3++. This gives just enough durability to units t last that one turn. One turn is all they need since you will be asaulting turn two. The other key to helping your units survive that one turn is target saturation. If you have too many units to kill, then you will get into assault. It is also good to have different types of targets. This puts pressure on your opponent to have the right "tool" in position to shoot your units.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENzx6-LxlIAxTX9KieoVwA_4nPG7OLVdTvp1NpatnpHT_iqEnjRTF7N6Y99iRTcbcuJwebVn8pHv7-S4Q9vuW91JM5XvHPTyGRuTQSUFKV4ZUSz19cC8cb-NczVZ5DiAQZHsu_D4vqBY/s1600/sweep-the-leg-large.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiENzx6-LxlIAxTX9KieoVwA_4nPG7OLVdTvp1NpatnpHT_iqEnjRTF7N6Y99iRTcbcuJwebVn8pHv7-S4Q9vuW91JM5XvHPTyGRuTQSUFKV4ZUSz19cC8cb-NczVZ5DiAQZHsu_D4vqBY/s320/sweep-the-leg-large.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So the list I'm looking at is a 10 man unit of assault terminators with 2 sanguinary priests. This will allow me to combat squad or to leave them big to control an area of the board. This unit's job is to pressure up the front and control the middle. I want to push my opponent back.<br />
<br />
Next up is my first wave of drop pods. I'm planning on running a 10 man death company and 2 death company dreadnoughts. I have had good luck with dreadnoughts in drop pod. People are gearing up for infantry armies and a couple of dreads with blood talons is very scary to some units. Again one turn to kill them before they are in assault....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL8gRWI0qn2Q74Ga8gauS1-BFEHkroL4V9BfZa_X-LdxePcqGNaWWO5JKCGaC4GYPp-_CwF_LXA402r_BnoLTRxzN2S9t9wq3x-KulSL0sIHkAlcWmDkuUBWUC0QcpLhpvKbzvaDJ9ECk/s1600/Knownofear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL8gRWI0qn2Q74Ga8gauS1-BFEHkroL4V9BfZa_X-LdxePcqGNaWWO5JKCGaC4GYPp-_CwF_LXA402r_BnoLTRxzN2S9t9wq3x-KulSL0sIHkAlcWmDkuUBWUC0QcpLhpvKbzvaDJ9ECk/s320/Knownofear.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My final wave is a command squad with 4 plasma rifles and a libby, an assault squad to grab objectives and a scout squad with sniper rifles. I'm also going to run Corbulo. His 2+ feel no pain will allow him to "tank" for unit I put him in. This should negate weight of fire units shooting at me.<br />
<br />
I'm hoping to proxies this list soon, and when I do pictures and a report will be written. All thoughts and comments are welcome. I'm curious if this list will hold out vs the new Tau also.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J0WNFfI50HY/T6JRiIYi1QI/AAAAAAAAD5w/4G7frOBj7jw/s1600/47-1317153341.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J0WNFfI50HY/T6JRiIYi1QI/AAAAAAAAD5w/4G7frOBj7jw/s320/47-1317153341.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Con of the North is long over, and it is time to get my final thoughts on my list and games down on paper so to speak. I went with a drop pod/spearhead style army and turned in a 3-0 performance. I was in top running but 2 daemon armies edged me out with better painting and perfect battle points.<br />
<br />
I took a straight Space Marine list with no fortifications. I had 3 units in drop pods and a tank force to thrust into their center. Out of the 38 players at CotN, many were playing gunline infantry armies behind an aegis defence line. While this is what I planned for, how games played out were not as planned.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">The List..</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />
Lysander<br />
comand squad with champion, one vet with storm shield, one vet with power sword, drop pod<br />
Ironclad Dreadnought with heavy flamer, drop pod<br />
Dreadnought with heavy flamer, drop pod<br />
10x assault terminators, 5 with thunder hammer storm shields<br />
10x tactical marines, multi melta, melta<br />
5x scouts, Sargent with sniper rifle<br />
Land Raider Redeemer with multimelta<br />
Vindicator<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">Game One...</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />
Game one was against Imperial Guard. His list was different with 2x vet plasma squads in chimeras, a hydra, a squad of Russes with the str6 ap4 no cover gun and plasma cannon sponsons. He also had a exterminator Russ with pask and a unit of ogryns and primeris psycher. He had some chaos allies also in the way of a squad with scorcer and a cultist squad.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BenA-To9xok/USWWEw2Yj-I/AAAAAAAAFEM/wmpdZAYeILU/s1600/cotn+13+294.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BenA-To9xok/USWWEw2Yj-I/AAAAAAAAFEM/wmpdZAYeILU/s400/cotn+13+294.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The terrain was a heavy city style board. I dropped in on a flank and my drop pod units killed the vet squads and most of his tanks. Max points and on to game 2.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">Game Two...</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />
Game two I drew a Grey Knight army. He was running two strike squads in rhinos, 2 death cultist units in rhinos, a couple dread knights, a couple venerable autocannon dreadnoughts, and Cotaez.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZRiszyS359k/USWV_UTUShI/AAAAAAAAFCg/2LRCWAK0rbg/s1600/cotn+13+280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZRiszyS359k/USWV_UTUShI/AAAAAAAAFCg/2LRCWAK0rbg/s400/cotn+13+280.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Our board was dominated by a large hill that we played as difficult. It was the mission with variable point objectives. My unit of 10 terminators dominated the middle of the board, not by fighting, but just by position. As a result I keep pressure on my opponent and was able to keep him away from the objectives. He was winning the attrition war, but due to 6th playing a little slower, he underestimated when to move out. I controlled the middle and squeaked a minor win.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">Game Three...</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />
Game three I drew a Space Marine list with a defense line. He had four full tactical squads with rhinos, a defense line with quad gun, missile devastators, vindicator, 5 shooty terminators, and Lysander also. It was a four objective game and two were at mid field and two behind the defense line.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IDl24uGfFKg/USWWHoFe-sI/AAAAAAAAFFM/Pm7H7e57Scc/s1600/cotn+13+302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IDl24uGfFKg/USWWHoFe-sI/AAAAAAAAFFM/Pm7H7e57Scc/s400/cotn+13+302.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With lots of difficult terrain it was slow going for my terminators and land raider. My drop pods did their job and kept pressure on his line. He was slowly killing my units, BUT not moving out. My scouts easily claimed an objective out of his line of sight. His devastators and a tactical squad easily held one of his objectives. One in front of his middle was contested by both of use, but I had first blood due to drop pod dreads, and line breaker with Lysander and his command squad in combat with tactical squads behind the line. Victory to me even though I was getting pounded.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">Lessons Learned.....</span></strong></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Assaults can work. They will take a pounding. Mobility is huge if you live through the game. Pressure is key to pinning you opponent in place. My 10 man terminator unit barely fought all day but the easily won the last two games for me by keeping my opponent back. People were obsessed about killing them and staying away from them. Sixth Edition really does reward assault armies with it's missions and secondary objectives. You really just need the survivability.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dark Star GT is next up for me and I'm taking a similar list. I expect to maybe go .500 with the meta I think will be there, but you never know with these missions. I do have some solid ideas for an assault list from my experience at CotN. I look forward to building an ally force and using these lessons.</div>

<br />
<br />
Terrain is the third "army" for me. I have two other full 40k armies, but recent began focusing on terrain. It really is like collecting a full army with many different themes and approaches to doing it. I took the lazy way and have been focusing on some prepainted terrain that matched my game board, but you could easily spend a year painting and modeling terrain that are center pieces on their own.<br />
<br />
Con of the North's Terrain Specialties gaming group have some of the best terrain I have ever played on. Simply beautiful stuff. They also have a ton of it, with them doing a full 19 themed boards for their recent RTT.<br />
<br />
I'm always looking for ideas for boards,armies,or miniatures, so I thought I would just show you some of their great boards....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last weekend we made our annual trip up to Saint Paul for Con of the North. It is an awesome Friday thru Sunday con. This year Zach and Brian, friends of mine also cam up with my wife and daughter for a weekend of gaming and good times.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Con of the North is the highlight of my winter gaming. Getting to go up north with friends and family and play some awesome games on the best terrain I have ever had the pleasure to play on. While the registration methods of the con has much to be desired in efficiency and effectiveness, the games Terrain Specialties run are top notch. So much so, it has caused another dilemma, too many sign ups.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I registered online in November for the February, and while I got into the Sunday RTT fine, I only got into one event out of 5 on Saturday. Of coarse due to their system, I did not know until registration Friday night. I was very upset.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we made lemonade...... I focused on playing games with my daughter and just hanging out. I finished painting my army and wrote my list up since I forgot it at home on the computer desk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sunday saw a packed RTT with 38 people playing! The armies on display were very top notch and the table are premo. Unfortunately I was doing well and never took any army pictures. I did get pictures of the tables. I'll post those up in another article to follow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I leave you with Saturday pictures of the con and yes I will go back next year. This time I hope to run a couple events on Saturday, in an attempt to work around this stupid registration system.</div>

<br />
Every one's hobby ebbs and flows. How much it swings in either direction may vary by person or by periods in their life. My hobby is an evolving thing. She is alive and roaring at times, and in deep hibernation at times. When I started this blog, my mistress the hobby was in full bloom. Tournaments were plenty and I was in the middle of a great army build my Crimson Fists. Today I'm settling into my new career. The bulk of my Fists are finished, but allies open up new opportunities for future projects. What the future holds for my hobby and this blog is the question I'm struggling to find.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I'm not giving up my hobby. I love gaming and I love 40k. I have loved 6th edition and I'm enjoying the "narrative" approach. But lordy I'm missing tournaments. There are still a ton of GTs but in my area I noticed a decline in local RTTs. Partly there are less, and partly my weekends are spent working and with family. The question I'm asking myself is how do I get excited like before?<br />
<br />
The first thing I was able to do was sign up for the Darkstar GT. I was sad I would have to miss the Bugeater GT this year due to work conflicts, but the reshuffling of work rotations opened up the weekend for the Darkstar. I'm really pumped for this! This one event has me thinking of new lists and new allies.<br />
<br />
Con of the North and my annual trip to Saint Paul is in a week and a half. This trip is always a shot in my arm for hobbing after a long winter. Seeing so many beautiful armies and terrain is a very good jump start to my painting and modeling. Also I finished really strong in the RTT last year at 1-0-2. my second game was a failed 5++ away from a win and my last game was a tie due to my wife's laptop getting stolen and really getting to play the game out. It was a top ten finish in a 30 man field of top armies and players.<br />
<br />
Next project that has me playing more is my game room. I got an awesome table from Terrain Specialties last year and was able to purchase a bunch of terrain this Xmas for it. While some of my pressing projects are not related to my armies, they are things like new lighting and painting the game room, and lots of shelving.<br />
<br />
So 2013 looks bright. I'm attending 2 GTs this year, the Darkstar GT and the Renegade GT in November. Mage Con RTTs should be fun and I'll have plenty of time off in October for the Kornhusker RTT. Model wise, I'm looking at adding some allied forces. I have a small Blood Angel force that looks fun for my SoB and I picked up some eldar to run with my Crimson Fists. I also plan on working on my Sister of Battle army. They need to be stripped and re based. My last goal is to post more. I regret letting my blog go so long without attention. While it is a huge time sink, it was very rewarding and a very good tool for getting my army painted. Hopefully it was enjoyable for people to read also.<br />
<br />
So first up is Con of the North. Look for an article on the army I'm bringing and events I have signed up for. I hope to have lots of pictures and my an interview or two. So no matter what state your hobby is in, have fun. Remember it's just little plastic men we are pushing around!<br />
<br />
That's my 2 cents for today...Dunn911http://www.blogger.com/profile/04528417511673449145noreply@blogger.com0
